Reflections

Posted in Just talking, Me on December 24, 2010 by TheFifthSister

As Christmas day approaches I can’t help but think about the last year and all that’s happened. It’s turned out to be a great year and I’m happy to look back on the majority of it with smiles and a feeling of accomplishment.

I spent the first half of the year gigging and had the most amazing time. I really love performing, despite my terrible stage fright, and worked alot on my confidence and self-esteem. I even added Pat Benatar covers to my setlist! 🙂 I’ve been fortunate to be offered to play with two sets of artists that I love; D.J Blues Bar and Grace and the Magic Roots. Thank you guys! I even got to play at the Riverside Festival in the summer thanks to the wonderful Mike Harper. Thank you Mike for many gigs this year as well!

Girl and her Wolf got the attention of the Riese producers when it won a fan contest towards the start of the year and got me some attention for a little while. That was quite fun! I wear my Riese tshirt with pride knowing that the producers are fans of the song.

My two biggest achievements and defining moments of 2010 were graduating and getting  a job. My Mum was so proud of me when I graduated. My whole family was, but my Mum lit up when she saw me in my cap and gown. Both my parents have always pushed me to follow my dreams and encouraged me to study everything that would lead me to them. I love them both lots. And I got my first job; sound technician at Quad Studios! There’s not many people who can say that their first job was the job they’d wanted! I really lucked out here. I love my job. I’m continuing to learn and grow and expand my knowledge and capabilites and I’m fortunate to work in an environment that allows that. My boss respects me and listens to my opinion… mostly. I’m happy that I’ve been able to introduce a new recording technique to the studio. I’m really excited to know that I enter 2011 with a great job… and the hours are great!

I found a new love of volunteering and managed to work on some absolutely incredible projects this year. Lyric Lounge in both Leicester and Loughborough were great experiences and very inspirational. I learned a lot of new skills and built more confidence in myself to work hard and be myself. Through it I found WORD! and continue to find inspiration, and help with my work as well as getting to expand my sound tech experience. Through both I’ve learned to look at my writing in different ways and it’s helping become a better songwriter… and it really makes me happy. It also led me to new friends that have quickly filled my heart. I really am blessed to know these lovely people! They know who they are 😉

I got to spend two weeks in Florida with my family. I quickly overcame my fear of rollercoasters and became quite the junky, riding every rollercoaster I could get on – I think the total at the end was 12 different rollercoasters. I went on most more than once as well! I got to spend an afternoon with my favourite band Sci-Fried at their studio, hanging out and hearing stories, listening to the new album “Future Tense” as they recorded parts of it, having the SFC tour… it was really a surreal day and one of the greatest experiences of my life so far.

I got to meet Chibi and Rainbow from The Birthday Massacre (for a third time) when I took my boyfriend to see them for his 21st birthday. We celebrated our third year together too! We’ve had some lovely times together. I love him lots! Thank you baby for all that you’ve done and for your love.

Had some fantastic fun with my best friend. She’s always been a tower of strength and this year has seen our friendship tested but survive (she left me to work in Germany… then she came back. Yay! All is right with the world again!) We saw AFI together, had Rock Band parties, drank many bottles of wine, had way too many late nights gigglefests, spent a day at Stratford-Upon-Avon, shopped, cooked, laughed, cried… I love her lots. Thank you fruitloop for always being there!

I got four new tattoos throughout the year; “Innamorata” just after Christmas, a horse shoe and “Faith Manages” for my 20th birthday and a couple of weeks a go I got three coloured love hearts to celebrate having a paying job. That’s now 10 tattoos in total (so far haha)

Sadly, the year saw the passing of a dear family friend and I was able to pay tribute to her in a poem. It saddens me that she won’t be here for Christmas but I know we’ll all remember her as the kind and loving woman that she was and she’ll be in our hearts always. Rest in peace sweet C.

I wrote a whole new collection of songs and finally finished some I’d started as long as two years ago. Hoping that in time I’ll finally record and finish arrangements on them now that I have some money to work on creating a good home studio setup that allows me to express more creativity. Ooh, exciting!! Plug-ins and a new MIDI keyboard controller are on the horizon me thinks……. Eager to try out some new stuff! Lots of new lyrics written that mean I may be able to do something different for a while. Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh, so excited!

It’s amazing to think how different I feel now then I did at the start of the year. 12 months ago I was an unhappy unemployed student with dreams of being a musician/sound engineer just praying to whoever would listen that I’d finish my course, get my dissertation written, find a job that I could tolerate and make it through the rest of the year. It’s safe to say I did that! I’m so relieved and thankful that I managed to land on my feet. And I feel like I’ve found a balance. I get to do a job I love, continue to write songs and poems whenever I have the urge to and I still get to volunteer as often as I’m able to. And I’m still learning! It’s nice to know I’ve got a great set of family and friends that offer me such great opportunities, support and love. Thank you to each and everyone of you for helping to make 2010 a good year and I hope that I can return the favour to you in 2011.

Hoping 2011 is gonna bring more creativity, more projects and more fun and love. I have ideas for things I want to make happen… I’m gonna make 2011 another year to remember!
Merry Christmas to one and all and I hope your 2011 is nothing but bright and beautiful.
Much love

Save Me From The Christmas Covers!

Posted in Just talking, Me with tags on December 13, 2010 by TheFifthSister

This month is torture at work. The majority of the bands are rehearsing Christmas songs for upcoming parties, gigs and functions they’re playing towards Christmas time. Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m no Scrooge. I do enjoy Christmas and parties but there’s only so many times you can hear bands playing Slade and Band Aid covers out of tune, out of time and with the wrong words! I’d be happy if they played some rare, and even obscure, Christmas themed songs and provide us with some variety.

I’m very excited that my favourite band, the ulmighty Sci-Fried, have just released their first Christmas song; “Star Wars Christmas” which also features the lovely Marc With A C. Yes! Yes, it’s a Star Wars inspired Christmas song for geeks and Star Wars lovers everywhere. I adore Sci-Fried, they are friends of mine and they’re so talented at uniting geeks with driving guitars, pounding drums and witty, geeky lyrics that make you wanna fly your geek flag high! I’m so happy to see them apply it to the holiday season and bring some festive cheer to geeks everywhere… and the video has PUPPETS! (Anyone who knows me will know I have a soft spot for puppets. Yoda, Kermit, Rygel, etc…)

Geeks Unite

Howdy!

I have just returned from a great two week holiday in Kissimmee/Orlando, Florida. Two weeks in a house with 10 family members. Sometimes we wanted to kill each other but we had a lot of fun together, riding rollercoasters, playing in the pool and having adventures in the US.

Marvel land at Universal Island of Adventure; I swear I had died and gone to heaven!! I want to be buried there. I had an amazing time on the Spiderman and Hulk rides and shopping in the Marvel shops. I also loooooooooooved Star Tours at Disney Hollywood Studios. Went on that many times and spent a fortune in the Star Wars shop there afterwards! Also hit Busch Gardens, Seaworld, Universal Studios; rollercoaster fun had at all and I got to geek out often!

I got to meet one of my favourite bands while I was over there. The great, the wonderful Sci-Fried. For those who have never listened to Sci-Fried, Sci-Fried are a geek rock band from Florida who specialise in writing songs about all my favourite shows, films and things. I love them! And through a strange twist of fate we have ended up friends and they invited me to come visit them at their studio while I was over there. Let me tell you, it was a fantastic time! I got a tour of the Star Trek and Star Wars filled/covered studio, I got to preview the new album that will come out next year, I got to hang out and chat with the guys and they gave me a whole bunch of swag (tshirts, posters, etc.) to bring home with me. I am a freakin’ walking Sci-Fried advertisement! But the guys were so amazingly lovely. They spent ages telling me stories and talking about their music. I got to tell them a little about mine and they gave me tips on working in the music industry which was really nice.

I did miss the Word! show gang; my lovely lovely friends who sent me radio-love while I was away. I really thank them for that! They are a great bunch of people and I’m really honoured that they are in my life. And of course I missed the rest of my friends and my family. It’s been lovely catching up with people this week.

So, I was fully intending to return focuses, inspired and ready to write and play and record and well… that hasn’t really worked out. I’m not exactly sure what my plans are at the minute. I’m very tired from jetlag and being unwell. May have possibly pulled/damaged/strained muscles around my stomach which is causing me a lot of pain and discomfort.

I did do some writing while I was away. I enjoyed looking out the window of the plane over America and was writing about what I saw below. It needs some work and I’m not really sure it will make it to becoming a song but it’s really the only thing I have to work on while I feel so blah!

I feel like that’s such a downer – I can’t end this post like that! My brother returns to college next week meaning RECORDING TIME! Empty house which means I can work on some new demos. Yay! Check back next week for more details

Much love

Validation

Posted in Just talking, Me on August 10, 2010 by TheFifthSister

You know, to me the best thing about being a musician, singer-songwriter, writer, etc. is not about making money – in fact I make no money from it – it’s about making myself happy, enjoying what I do and making my Mom proud of me for following my dreams, making my Dad proud of me for putting myself out there, making my Grandparents proud, making my friends proud… These are the people that love and support me and their validation and their genuine enjoyment of what I do is just so rewarding.

I mention this because today I showed my Nan the Age of Innocence poem/lyrics I’m working on because we’d spent the afternoon with two outta the three cousins it’s about. And she really loved it. She thought it was so sweet and told me I should have it written out “nicely”. I think she meant published… she’s always telling me to do big productions on everything! It was just nice. I was so nervous about showing it to her.
I showed it to the eldest of the three cousins, Beth, yesterday and she loved it which really made my day.

I was just watching an interview on YouTube with Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor talking about “success” and it sparked this post. I don’t care about being famous, I enjoy playing, I love writing, I love performing (and my stage fright is getting better). My family and friends urge me to do it and I thank them for their support!

Much love

Age of Innocence

Posted in Me, Music on August 6, 2010 by TheFifthSister

For anyone who knows me well, you’ll know that three of the most important people in the world to me are my cousins. I have five but I am especially close to the youngest three. When the youngest was born I decided to write a song for the three of them… last night I found my old songbook and the start of the song. Two years later I’ve finished lyrics.

With the electric off I sat in my room surrounded by candles and curled up on the floor with my iPod and my notebooks to sit and write, inspired by the candlelight. It was beautiful. I worked on lots of unfinished work and channeled such calm and love into it. I was sad when the electric came back on and I ran around turning all the lights off again. I’m going to eventually get round to writing a guitar part for this but I just wanted to share. Please, let me know what you think.

Age of Innocence

With happiness you smile
As you’re playing all the while
Innocent eyes beam with joy
Special little girls and a special little boy

Open arms wide
And wrap you up inside
A hug so tight, I can’t let go
I love you more than you’ll ever know

Your laughter brings a smile to my face
As you’re running all over the place
There isn’t a moment when you’re sitting still
And you make me giggle against my will

Watch over you while you’re playing
Listen to every word you’re saying
I find your sense of wonder amazing
And I love the fact that you are crazy

It’s a special bond we share
Even though I’m not always there
You know I love you; that I always care
A relationship like ours is rare

Before I know it you’ve crawled, you’ve walked, you’ve spoke
And in the blink of an eye you’re two and three and eleven years old
And soon you’ll come into your own
Into incredible people you’ll grow

You’ll never have to be afraid
I’ll be there every step of the way
I’ll be there to hold your hand
At your side I’ll always stand

But for now, keep those innocent eyes
And keep that happy smile
You’ll always be in my heart
And will be until the end of time

New Banner

I thought this blog could do with some house cleaning so I gave it a new banner. What do you think?
